As I began switching my diet over to gluten and dairy free, one of the first things I noticed was that the spice packets we used weekly were off the menu.

Why? The basic answer: wheat (gluten) and whey (dairy) are used as fillers.

I was shocked! How had I not noticed this before? As I am sure many people do, I naively thought spice packets were just made with spices and put into a convenient packet. This is mostly true...but I am not so trusting anymore.

So naturally, I went to the internet to find some tried-and-true homemade recipes. After experimenting, I found the perfect recipe for our family (even the littles love it!). Honestly, in the long run homemade is better because 1) I know what's in it, and 2) It is fresh-thus more rich in flavor and healthier for me and my family.

Below are our favorite recipes for Fajitas and Tacos. I like to make up multiple recipes so that I don't have to get out all the spices Every. Single. Time. To make it convenient, I use the 4oz. Ball Dry Herb Jars (from their Culinary Herb Series). They are airtight glass jars that have holes on the top for sprinkling the mix. *Bonus: they are (top rack) dishwasher safe!

When the meat is ready I sprinkle on the mix so it covers the meat and add in a little bit of water to simmer in the flavor. A whole "recipe" amount isn't always used-I just eyeball it-so it goes further than you'd think.

Feel free to play with it and let me know what you do!
