Hobgoblin Ears Pattern (Crochet)

Happy last Tuesday of February! I've been wanting to take the plunge into writing some crochet patterns of my own, and since this is one that I make a ton of, I thought it'd be the perfect first pattern to share!

Every Autumn (especially for Halloween) I get A LOT of requests of "Dobby" hats for families dressing up as Harry Potter characters. It's so easy to find hat patterns these days, but a fun ear pattern tends to be hard to come by-necessity is the mother of invention, right?

{Disclosure: Some of the links in this post are affiliate links and if you go through them to make a purchase I will earn a small commission. I link these companies and their products because of their quality and not because of the commission I receive from your purchases. The decision is yours, and whether or not you decide to buy something is completely up to you.}

I am offering this pattern for free on my blog, because I know how much I personally love free patterns. That being said, if you'd prefer an ad-free printable PDF, the pattern can be purchased on Etsy.

These ears can be added to any beanie style hat, but I prefer to use the Crochet Puppy Hat Pattern from Repeat Crafter Me as the base. They just work up so nicely and I love the easy earflaps with ties for the babies.

Let's get started!

Materials

Yarn: Approx. 45 meters worsted weight (size 4) in Buff (or preferred color)

Hook: H or 5.00mm

Other: Scissors; yarn needle (for weaving through and sewing to hat)

Abbreviations

ch = chain

sc = single crochet (US)

slst = slip stitch

st = stitch

sc2tog = sc 2 stitches together (aka a decrease, or dec)

*NOTE: The more wonky, the better! So if you "mess up" it's ok to keep going. Most of all-have fun!*

Pattern

Chain 26.

Row 1: SC in second ch from hook, SC in each ch to end (25 stitches)

Rows 2-5: ch1, turn. SC each st across (25)

Row 6: ch1, turn. Sc2tog, SC across, sc2tog last two (23)

Row 7: ch1, turn. SC across, sc2tog last two (22)

Row 8-13: repeat rows 6 & 7

Row 14-16: ch1, turn. SC across. (13)

Row 17: repeat row 7

Row 18-23: Repeat rows 6 & 7

Row 24: ch1, turn. Sc2tog, SC next

Row 25: ch1, turn. Sc2tog

Ch 1, sc around entire ear. Tie off and leave an 18" tail. Weave tail through the short side to the corner. Alternate needle over/under 2 stitches across the bottom to cinch the ear together. Use the rest of the tail to sew onto the hat.

And that's it! Happy Crocheting, friends. Please let me know what you think of the pattern and if you'd be interested in more.
