Crochet Temperature Blanket
While browsing a crochet facebook group I follow, I saw that many people were working on "temperature blankets". I was a bit confused. What in the world is a temperature blanket?! After asking around (and doing a quick Pinterest search), let me tell you!
A temperature blanket is a blanket you add to daily (or weekly according to your time), the color of which is determined by the temperature! Here's how it works: a color is assigned a specific temperature range (typically 5-10 degree increments). Each day, you add the color of the day to your blanket. I know, seems kind of "duh" once you hear what it is, but they are very amazing and unique.
Traditionally, these blankets are made in the desired width in either a straight or rippled pattern. Some are incredibly intricate with the first of the month being a specific stitch, every day a basic stitch, holidays and special dates are another stitch, and separate colors for extreme weather like snow or rain.
Some people do them granny square style (like mine below). The center/block color is the daily high. Others do both the daily high and low, with the low in the middle and high around that. It all depends on how colorful you are hoping it will be.
Others are doing corner to corner (C2C) blankets. This is done in a couple of different styles. Some are doing each month as a large square that will be joined at the end for the entire blanket. Still more are doing a giant blanket from one corner to the opposite corner encompasing the entire year.
Like I said, some are very intricate, and that's what makes each one so special and unique.
I decided to do hexagon granny squares. I've been wanting to learn how to do hexagons, but couldn't think of a project to do with them, so it has been on the back burner. I am so excited to have found this temperature blanket idea so I can pull my hexagons to the front of the queue! Each month will begin with a hexagon in the color of it's birthstone. I haven't got it all figured out yet, and you can see that my hexagons are not perfect, but I am having so much fun learning how to make these! I am getting alot of practice in transitioning colors and joining squares.
Have YOU started a temperature blanket? I'd love to see a pic! Feel free to post it in the comments. Happy crocheting!!!
