Savvy Saturday: Quick Curtains on a Dime
If you're looking for a post on sewing curtains "from scratch" this is NOT it. I still haven't taken that particular leap in my sewing. However, this is a quick jot about turning something existing curtains into what you want for the space you need!
If you're like me, you WANT to coordinate your curtains (for me: in the kitchen), but sometimes its easier said then done. So what did I do? I knew what color scheme I wanted, just not exactly how to execute it on a budget (curtains can be so expensive!). After browsing online, the local Bed, Bath, and Beyond, and Lowes/Home Depot, I ventured into Ikea. It was TOTALLY worth it. They do have some expensive curtains, but I love that most of theirs come in sets of two, which is not always the case at other venues.
I bought a couple packages of the MJÖLKÖRT curtains (which are $15/pair) because I love how light and flowy they are! I can have my privacy while still enjoying some natural light. A full set went over my sliding door off the dining area, and then I took one panel from the second package and simply folded it in half and sewed a zigzag across the seams. The rod I am using doesn't require the long tabs on the tops so I sewed them down as well.
{Side note: I LOVE using flat-head quilting pins! They are my favorite pins because they are long and have a larger surface to grasp for easier use. And while I am sewing, they are much easier to pull out. You can find ones that fit your personality, including flowers, bows, buttons, and butterflies!}
That's it! I hung the curtain and love it! by simply folding it over, the curtain has a bubble effect, which adds to the flowy, airiness feel I want in the open kitchen. No cutting, no ~major~ measuring, and my kitchen is covered for $30!
Happy Sewing!
